PRIDE Month: Educational & Community Resources

June 28, 1969, marked the beginning of an almost week-long protest in the streets of New York City. Ignited by a police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay nightclub, this stand for equal rights became known as the Stonewall Riots. A year later, the first gay pride marches took place in different cities across the U.S. to commemorate Stonewall, with more cities participating year after year. Finally, in 1999, President Bill Clinton officially recognized June as Pride Month in the United States.

Though Pride is now openly celebrated around the world, the fight for LGBTQ+ rights continues. From the first U.S. gay rights organization established in 1942 to the Supreme Court legalizing same-sex marriage in 2015, great strides have been made toward equality — but change still needs to happen.
