Mind the Enrollment Gap
A look at the gap between what private university marketers assume about prospective students and what those students actually believe about private universities
Same pressure, uneven impact
Each planning cycle, private university leaders set the positioning, media strategy, and recruitment budget that determine who enrolls next. Increasingly, these decisions play out in a shrinking market.
Over the past decade, the sector has responded by offering online programs, expanding outreach to adult learners, building transfer pipelines, and recruiting internationally. However, none of it addresses what's actually changed beneath the numbers: students no longer grant a degree inherent value.
In a tight job market, a degree is not seen as a guaranteed path to a job, which puts more pressure on students to justify the cost.
This is now the reality for every university, public or private. But the latest enrollment cycle shows that the pressure hasn't been felt equally. According to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, enrollment grew 3.0% at community colleges and 1.4% at public four-year schools. Across all of undergraduate education, enrollment edged up 1.2%. The only group that lost ground was private nonprofit four-year institutions, down 1.6%.
If everyone is facing the same pressure, why is it hitting private universities harder?
To find out, we used Market Mirror, Red Door's predictive audience research methodology. We built 20 AI-modeled prospective students, grounded in subscription-grade behavioral and demographic data, and put seven of higher ed's most relied-on marketing assumptions in front of them. This study shows which ones still hold, and which are quietly costing institutions students they could have had.
