Second Life: It's not a game

Second Life continues to generate significant media buzz attracting more users and investors who are drawing comparisons to companies like eBay, PayPal, Microsoft and even Google. Why? Because all of these companies can be recreated within Second Life, or "metaverse" - apparently as we are now calling it...

"Some of that money is going to Nike (Charts), Sony BMG, Toyota (Charts), Sun, Starwood, and many others, which have operations in Second Life. Some sell virtual clothing and other merchandise for avatars; some even move real product. IBM has built stores for Circuit City and Sears, where, for example, you can mock up a kitchen with Sears appliances to see how it would look."

Behavioral Targeting: The New Killer App for Research

Advertising Age - Digital - Behavioral Targeting: The New Killer App for Research:

"'When you have a client that finds something is working, they want more of it, and behavioral targeting is a way to get at it,' he said. He said a lot of marketers overlook the back-end analytics they can get from behavioral targeting: 'They think of it as another network or a way to get at people, but it's also a way to dramatically inform future efforts.'"

Microsoft has quietly introduced Expression an Adobe Creative Suite/Studio killer/competitor

Well, killer might be a strong word for it but Microsoft has released its Expression Web software package for creating something called “standards-based” websites? Hmmm…. Microsoft on the standards bandwagon, has hell frozen over?

The suite of products which includes the now shipping Expressions Web for web development, Expression Design an illustration and graphic design set of tools, which still appears to be in beta, Expression Blend which apparently “blends” the line between desktop and web apps also in beta and the now shipping Expression Media for managing and controlling (among other things) all of those crazy assets you’ll be making with Expression’s other suites.

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft can create a suite of products that will so closely compete with the Adobe line of products.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how/if/when they drop the ball on this one…

Meanwhile, I can personally attest to the fact that hell is still nice and roasty, since my Outlook Web Access is still hobbled in anything other then IE.

YouTube blocks mobile video encoder | The Register

YouTube blocks mobile video encoder The Register
This is interesting, because this little company is getting in trouble for providing a way to access someone else's (namely YouTube's) content via a mobile device. This can mark trouble for all sorts of interesting initiatives right now. Basically, it appears that they are saying that, because you modify our (or other people's content that lives on our site?) content by transcoding it in another way, you are violating a law...

Basically, what it is hindering is Verizon's exclusivity on delivering YouTube via their mobile devices...

Forget About Being Number 1 in Google?

While eye tracking studies indicate that top rankings in the natural results of Google lead to overwhelmingly higher click through rates than the lower positions, this article argues that the same may no longer hold true for PPC ads.

Analytics: In-House or Outsource?

"If analytics isn't absolutely core to your business, then you'll probably be better off outsourcing -- at least until the hiring/training/method situation has improved dramatically. It's hard enough for companies to do non-core jobs well without all the difficulties currently afflicting Web analytics."

Metrics for Non-Transactional Web Sites

As much as we want to believe it, retention metrics don't tell us whether a visit to a "non-transactional" site was a success or not.

"The role of surveys and other visitor feedback devices must be strengthened as part of the overall mix. The success of a visit where there's no transaction involved needs to be defined almost on the visitors own terms. The only people who can tell you whether their visit was successful or not are the visitors themselves."

User Generated Content Isn't Just for the Internet Anymore

"Look, Mom. I'm in the Superbowl."

That's right. Several advertisors are letting Jane and John Doe try their hand at writing TV commercials for the biggest media buy on earth – the Superbowl, a mere $2 million a minute. What a contest. What a prize

Go, go, go.

Has User-Generated Content Gone the Way of the Acronym

I am starting to see User-Generated Content being referred to frequently as "UGC" in the trade pubs. That means that the concept, and consequently the tactics, is already overused... thereby losing all meaning and degrading the effectiveness in the trendy world of the Web.
