Analyze, Strategize, Commoditize

"Websites without analytics suffer from blindness. Lacking clarity in your strategy can be detrimental to your plan and can lead you to costly and avoidable mistakes. The use of analytics to define business objectives and goals will aide in early identification of strengths and weaknesses to curb unnecessary work. "

TacoBell.com: Site Design Not Supporting Crisis Management Efforts

The media is in a frenzy over e-coli sickness tied to multiple Taco Bell locations and much has been said about the effectiveness of Taco Bell's crisis management PR efforts.

Bummer because I'm a fan of "the Bell".

I checked out Taco Bell's Web site and didn't see anything on the home page addressing food safety or Taco Bell's response to the public. You've got to dig into the Company/Press section to find this important information. An open letter from the CEO is included -which is a recommendation we've made in the past to our clients as an online crisis management best practice. Unfortunately, you've got to dig to find it.

It's common for major restaurant chains to keep PR specialists on retainer just for these types of situations. I wonder why they aren't hip to the value of a company's Web site, such as Taco Bell, during times of crisis? Really, for a company the size of Taco Bell, or Yum Brands, you'd think they would be prepared with a micro-site template that could be launched in a moments notice. At the very least, have the ability to quickly get some content onto the home page.

Create org charts (and site maps maybe) online

Today, Valleywag had a funny post and link to a tool where you can create your own version of Yahoo!'s corporate org chart. Entertaining for those who are into this type of thing I'm sure.

Well, I never knew that CogMap existed, but it's got potential beyond org charts for sitemapping applications (simple site maps anyway - someday).

Tis the season for viral marketing campaigns

Office Max has come up with not one, but a series of about 20 viral micro sites all with a quirky but entertaining holiday theme. On these sites, you can arm wrestle with a reindeer, dance like an elf, roast a turkey and much more.

Several of the micro sites meet the requirements of a good viral marketing campaign; they definitely have entertainment value, allow the user to be interactive, are unique and most importantly, are entertaining enough that you would pass the message along to your friends. The Office Max branding is present, but the logo is subtly placed on the lower right hand corner, which is also where you can navigate to the other micro sites.

I don’t know if Office Max really had to create 20 different micro sites, especially since some fall short in entertainment value compared to the others. But overall, the sites that are good are good and will definitely make their rounds during this holiday season.

Endless holiday fun for you and the whole family starts here: http://www.reindeerarmwrestling.com.
