From Larry St. John at FreshNews.com:

According to (WebsideStory) research, Monday is the most popular day of the week to surf the Internet, while Saturday and Sunday are the least popular. According to WebSideStory's StatMarket(R), Internet use worldwide on any weekday is higher than on the weekends, indicating that people are not spending much of their weekend leisure time online.

A follow-up to my IM post from 5/28.
This is from a Frank Barnako CBS MarketWatch email:

ONE IM-FITS-ALL SHOWS GROWTH
An instant-messaging client that allows access to a variety of IM services -- including those of America Online (AOL), Microsoft (MSFT) and Yahoo (YHOO) -- has almost doubled in use since February, according to a research report by Jupiter Media Metrix (JMXI). Trillian had 610,000 users in April, compared to 344,000 in February. These numbers are tiny compared to standalone IM clients (54 million for AOL, 29 million for Microsoft and 19 million for Yahoo), but "it appears Trillian is answering the call for one messaging platform to connect everyone," said Mainak Mazumdar, head of research and product development for Media Metrix.

A Spring 2002 survey of 400 computer programmers -- all working outside North America -- from Evans Data Corp. finds that roughly 34% of respondents say biometrics is their preferred method of authentication. Biometrics is the use of physical characteristics for identification (fingerprints, face-, eye- or voice-recognition systems). Evans mentions that biometric security has become increasingly popular since 11 September 2001.

Love instant messaging?
IM is becoming more and more prevalent in companies around the world. Some hesitance in the workplace has been due to the more public, yet restrictive, nature of IM with applications such as AOL IM, MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger.

Here are two multi-platform clients to take a look at:
Trillian
Jabber

Here are some private clients that your company may approve of:
Lotus Sametime
NetLert
Odigo
Jabber (duplicated above, but can be served privately)

Let me know if you have any questions about any of these.

Betting on the next Web
The next Web will be more intuitive and will make Web development more efficient and much, much cheaper.

When Tim Berners-Lee talks about his creation, the first generation of the World Wide Web, he refers to it as a rebellious adolescent. But if Mr. Berners-Lee is successful at creating version 2.0 of the Web, his first iteration will look like it was a mere toddler.

Trust on the Internet

A recent study by Princeton Survey Research Associates for Consumer WebWatch in January 2002 indicated that 59% of US Internet users trust small businesses as opposed to only 29% trusting large corporations. Only 26% of US Internet users trust Web sites that sell products/services online and 29% trust Web sites that provide information about what products/services to buy.

What do they think about the media? 48% trust newspapers and television - which is more than they trust charities and non-profits (46%).

How about this for a barometer: 40% trust the Federal government...

(I must interject that I am not really sure of what they mean by "trust"; does that mean that they would choose to do business, or simply believe what they have to say?)

From a CBS Marketwatch Report:

GOOD WEB DESIGN LEADS TO MORE TEST DRIVES

A well-designed manufacturer Web site can be integral in motivating automotive shoppers to visit dealer showrooms for a test drive, according to research by J.D. Power and Associates. The study found that 42 percent of respondents who rate a manufacturer's Web site as "outstanding" indicate they are more likely to visit a showroom for a test drive than they were prior to visiting the site. Web sites, combining sight, sound and motion, are more useful than traditional brochures, according to 90 percent of respondents. Mercedes-Benz, which ranked sixth in 2001, ranked highest in the study. Other top automakers' sites were those from Kia, BMW's Mini, Saturn (GM), and Suzuki.

A case for the CiO (Chief Internet Officer), or the Internet department:
Earlier this year, Mark Walsh, the former CEO of VerticalNet, joined the Democratic National Committee as its first-ever chief technology adviser. His intent with this position is to propagate the party's platform using his vast Internet and leadership experience.

EUROPEANS WILL TAX NET SALES

The European Union has decided to charge a sales tax on products bought and downloaded over the Internet. Sellers of music, software and videos will be affected. Frits Bolkestein, the EU's taxation commissioner, explained the tax would benefit continental merchants. "This will remove the serious competitive handicap which EU firms currently face," he said, according to the Associated Press. Europeans can often find lower prices for goods online than they can in their own countries. The EU may extend the tax to "hard" goods like books, a spokesman for the organization said in New York.

Followed an ad to this page at CA. Noticed some good 'net practices.

Look at the bottom right hand corner of this page. It's a veritable viral marketing / new business control panel. They are employing the tactics we advocate: newsletters, roi caluclators, call buttons, emailing the page and bookmarklets. Good work, CA.
