ESET and Red Door Interactive aim to raise awareness through destination-based game at South by Southwest show; first 100 finishers receive ESET’s award-winning antivirus software
ESET, the leader in proactive cybercrime and virus protection and Red Door Interactive, a premier strategic Internet Presence Management firm, pre-announced their ESET Win-a-VAIO® Scavenger Hunt at Austin, Texas’ South by Southwest® show next Sunday.
The game requires participants to follow clues and complete short tasks at various locations around the city through the use of “QR Codes” (Quick Response) or text messages that reveal their next destination.
“South by Southwest is a popular event that attracts thousands of tech-savvy people each year, and we wanted to be involved in a fun and educational way,” said Dan Clark, Vice President of Marketing and Research at ESET. ”We’re seeking to inform and educate the public about the continually evolving nature of cybercrime. For example, most users don’t know that cybercrime largely originates from organized criminal groups in central and Eastern Europe, China and other tech-savvy but emerging markets. By increasing awareness of cybercrime we hope to ensure users have productive, safe Internet experiences. Red Door Interactive creatively devised the scavenger hunt to help us do this in an engaging, one-on-one manner.”
A recent ESET study of Austin-based consumers revealed that nearly eight out of ten people still believe most computer attacks come from individual hackers and not sophisticated crime syndicates. Moreover, 90 percent of respondents thought that their home computer was currently free from any viruses, despite widespread reports noting nearly a third of computers in use today are infected. ESET’s Austin scavenger hunt brings people to a series of interactive installations designed to increase awareness of routine actions that can expose users to threats in a fun, experiential way.
The Scavenger Hunt will take place on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. and is designed to dispel many misperceptions of the prevalence and dangers of today cyber threats. The contest entails three clues that should take less than an hour to complete. The first 100 finishers receive a 1-year license for ESET’s award-winning antivirus software and will be entered to win a $2,000 Sony VAIO® laptop pre-loaded with the company’s antivirus software. Contestants can learn more and obtain their first “QR” clue at: http://www.eset.com/Austin or text “PLAY” to 68542.
“With the increasing popularity of cell phone applications on the iPhone, Android and other mobile devices, our goal was to utilize the emerging technology of QR codes and text messaging in order to drive traffic to these unique ESET experiences,” explained David Holtze, Business Manager at Red Door Interactive. “We’re excited and looking forward to increasing their brand awareness through this interactive hunt and contributing to the ESET experience at SXSW!”
