Facebook Users Like Brands for Discounts, Social Badging - MarketingProfs
“Though consumers turn to Facebook primarily to connect with friends and fill downtime, product discounts and “social badging” are the most commonly cited motivations for “liking” brands on Facebook, according to a survey from ExactTarget and Co-Tweet.
Over two in five surveyed Facebook users (43%) say they “like,” or are fans of, at least one brand on Facebook. Among them, 40% say they like brands to receive discounts and promotions, whereas 39% say they do so to publicly display their brand affiliations to others. By contrast, 23% of consumers who follow brands on Twitter do so for social-badging purposes.”

Apple Goes Social With Ping – AdWeek
~New Revamped Apple TV will Stream Netflix and TV shows~
On Wednesday, Steve Jobs announced the launch of Ping, a new social network on iTunes. Ping “serves as both a promotional platform for music artists and a music discovery vehicle. Users can elect to follow their favorite bands, and those artists can post photos, videos, album updates and tour dates via the service.”Additionally, with Ping, you can follow friends and share information and opinions on your own music.
This week Apple also announced the new, and cheaper ($99 down from $229) Apple TV. According to AdWeek’s, Apple to Stream TV, Netflix Content, Apple has also rebooted its TV strategy via deals to stream Netflix content as well TV shows from ABC and Fox. Only time can tell if the new strategy will help Apple TV “take off.”
Foursquare building self-serve tool for brand profiles - Advertising Age
“The main difference between branded profiles and regular user profiles is that users can “follow” a brand, rather than becoming friends with them. It’s a one-way process that’s easier for both users and brands to complete, similar to “liking” a page on Facebook. How iPad Usage is Shaping Up – eMarketer
“With iPads now in the hands of millions, studies have begun to examine how the superhyped tablet is fitting into real life, and whether the opportunity for publishers and advertisers is as big as they hoped. A survey by copywriting firm Cooper Murphy Webb found that iPad owners had taken to the device in a big way, and also for entertainment purposes. More than two in five said they used the tablet at least 10 hours weekly, and almost a quarter said it had become their primary entertainment device, ahead of TV and trailing PCs by just 9 percentage points.”
