The Good Employee: StrengthsFinder in the Workplace
We all have weaknesses. We all have imperfections and we all have shortcomings. Every person possesses particular limitations - that is what makes us human. While we all have weaknesses, we also carry a multitude of innate strengths that can be improved upon to become more significant than any of our weaknesses. Recognizing our natural abilities and developing them into strengths give us the capability to maximize our potential and experience success on various levels. But how do we discover what we're best at?
Utilizing 40 years of concentrated research on human strengths, Gallup Inc. created a language of the 34 most common talents found in humans and developed the Clifton StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment to help people discover and expand their natural strengths. This advanced online evaluation of personal talent is designed to measure one's raw abilities by asking participants about their daily behaviors and situational tendencies - all while identifying where an individual's greatest potential exists. In a culture that focuses heavily on finding ways to eradicate flaws, StrengthsFinder encourages people to focus on how to build upon their strengths within their given roles. All too often, we tend to overlook our natural talents, grieving over our deficiencies and overworking ourselves to compensate for what we lack, thus hindering progress. StrengthsFinder provides us with an opportunity to learn where we naturally excel and how to maximize what we do best, every single day.
Reid Carr, President & CEO of Red Door Interactive, was first introduced to StrengthsFinder 2.0 after attending a presentation led by Marcus Buckingham. Buckingham, a New York Times best-selling author, motivational speaker and business consultant, convinced Carr that people and teams who operate in their strengths perform better and are generally happier. "When I discovered StrengthsFinder 2.0, I finally had an operating system to insert into Red Door that I thought made sense to take it from the very personal experience to one shared with teams," Carr stated. Kate De Jong, Vice President of Employee Experience agreed, acknowledging that many years ago, Red Door recognized the benefits that come from focusing on people's strengths - which has shown to get the best work from everyone and results in a happy, healthy workforce. "Doing work that plays to your strengths invigorates you - it's not like work, it actually energizes you and gets you in 'the zone' where time flies by and lots gets done," she added.
StrengthsFinder has shifted a way of thinking and has altered how most people interact with others. "This strengths-based mindset helps people face challenges and new situations using their strengths to overcome difficulties, and that's good for everyone: the employee, his or her manager, and Red Door overall", De Jong says. As we look at people through a lens of strength opposed to weakness, we can recognize that StrengthsFinder has successfully changed the way people communicate, relate, and work with one another.
