We:30 Share & Tell: Allison Shares Her OSU Cowboys Fandom
Every Wednesday at 3:30 we gather to celebrate an employee who exemplifies our core values to inspire, share, evolve, exceed and be 100% jerk-free. In our Share & Tell edition, we invite the employee to share their unique story, or simply something that inspires them. This week Allison, one of our Senior Business Managers, shares her love for Oklahoma State sports!
When I was asked to do a Share & Tell about something I’m passionate about, one thing immediately popped into my head: my Oklahoma State University Cowboys!
My whole family has been die-hard Cowboys fans for as long as I can remember. I was going to football and basketball games before I could walk. Nearly everyone in my family has attended and/or graduated from there, so there was really no question as to what my college choice would be. I graduated from OSU in 2002, and while in school I had an internship in the athletics department. After graduation, I ended up landing a full-time job there, doing marketing and event planning for the fundraising office. One of the hardest parts about moving to California (aside from missing my family, obviously) was the immediate decrease in OSU sports attendance. I started an OSU alumni group here in 2007, and now host watch parties and get to meet lots of OSU fans living in the Southern California area.
One thing to note is that Oklahoma State has not historically been great in the athletics area. Up until the last 10-15 years, we’ve usually played the role of “little brother” to the University of Oklahoma. When we play the Sooners, they refer to it as Bedlam, and the games are always super competitive and intense.
We definitely make it a family affair at the games, and despite the fact that my parents have been divorced for over 20 years, we will often go to games together and tailgate beforehand. In the first photo you can see my parents with their respective significant others, along with other family members, cheering on the Pokes. One big happy family.
I have countless memories to mention of the great events I’ve seen, but a few in particular stick out: Bedlam football victories, the Final Four 2004 in San Antonio, the Wrestling National Championship in 2006, and of course the Fiesta Bowl in 2012. I brought a few mementos into the office from these events and others, but it’s hard to get a feel for how much this means to me in just a few photos and ticket stubs. Hopefully the next time you catch an OSU game on TV, you’ll cheer for the good guys in orange. Go Pokes!
