We:30 Share & Tell: Mia Introduces Us to Her Horse Pal Vern

Today's Share & Tell takes us down to the barn as our Social Media Intern, Mia, shares about her horse named Vern and her passion for riding!

Horseback riding has completely taken over my life since I was 7 years old. I told my parents I wanted to take lessons, and of course thinking it was just a “little girl who wants a pony” phase, they signed me up. Unfortunately for them, I was hooked after my first ride, and I have been riding horses ever since.

Vern came to me in a very special way. Vern’s previous owner, Ed, had an unexpected passing, and the woman who ran my barn was adamant in finding him a loving home that Ed would have wanted him to have. Ten years ago, she approached my Mom and I, thinking we would be a great home for Vern, and he has been with us to this day!

As I entered high school, I started competing on a national circuit and went to horse shows all over the state and country, which meant going to practice every day after school, and being gone most weekends. It was a great bonding experience for me and my mom, as we traveled around with all the girls at my barn, staying up late bathing Vern, cleaning saddles, practicing our patterns over and over again—this connection turned our barn into a family. It spurred on (for lack of a better term) a love for horses in my mom, and now she rides too. It is something I know we will always be able to do together.

Horseback riding in general helps me in so many areas of life, especially my work at Red Door. The biggest lesson I’ve had to learn is responsibility. When riding horses, you are responsible for another life—horses cannot exercise, feed or water themselves; you have to do it for them. As a kid, I spent almost every day at the barn, and decided to sacrifice time with friends or going to events to take care of Vern. I think this trait definitely carries over into my work life, just making sure projects and tasks are done within expectations.

Vern has become something so much greater than just a pet. He is a form of support for me in everything that I do. Horses are amazing animals, with unconditional love. They have a keen ability to sense emotion in others; if you are riding and are nervous or excited, they can feel that energy and react to it. Vern has comforted me in the saddest of times, and celebrated with me in wins and life achievements. He is my teammate, by my side through anything.

Every Wednesday at 3:30 we gather to celebrate an employee who exemplifies our core values to inspire, share, evolve, exceed and be 100% jerk-free. In our Share & Tell edition, we invite the employee to share their unique story, or simply something that inspires them.
