We:30 Share and Tell: Mariel's Dancin' Shoes

Every Wednesday at 3:30 we get together to celebrate an employee who exemplifies our core values to inspire, share, evolve, exceed and be 100% jerk-free. Our Share and Tell edition invites an employee to share something that inspires them and tells a unique story. This week Mariel brought her dancing shoes!

For our inaugural Share & Tell I am sharing…my dance shoes!

Reliable, flexible, and elegant, they are one of the main ways I stay healthy and stress-free outside of Red Door.

I've been a bunhead since I was three, but I didn't get my first real pair of character shoes (used in musical theater) until 2009. The most legit brand? LD Shoes, hands down. But these aren't something you can just BUY. Well, you can, but this is the brand that all Broadway shows source from: you can't walk into class wearing them without some years under your belt; some street cred. I didn't let myself buy a pair until I got my picture in the program of a musical I was in.

I finally made the pilgrimage to LD Shoes on a trip to New York City. Next door to a Salvation Army in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood was my happy place. 42nd Street was a couple blocks away and the wall had an autographed picture of Liza Minelli on it, so I figured I was at the right spot. Sitting down for my fitting, the manager nonchalantly asked me if I was in any shows. I think I kind of blinked and stammered something about not being a local.

Coming out of the store that day, I walked a little taller. I also may have done one of those Chorus Line kicks on the sidewalk. I had made it.

Now every time I slip on my LDs, I still feel a spark of that ol' razzle dazzle. Here's to you, Broadway.
