#GivingTuesday: Giving is Trending Year Round at Red Door

givingtuesday

Today, global charities, families, businesses, community centers, students and more will come together to participate in #GivingTuesday. In the same way that retail stores participate in Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the giving community has come together to create a movement comprised of charitable works and projects for Giving Tuesday. At Red Door, our Philanthropy Committee, Caring Hearts, will head over to the Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness center in downtown San Diego for our monthly visit to serve up some smiles at lunch. You might say, “tis the season,” but our Caring Hearts committee is active year round in an effort to foster a workplace that supports giving back to the community. It’s been a busy and exciting year in philanthropy for Red Door, and after cyber Monday, #givingtuesday is a reminder that giving never goes out of style. This past year the Red Door Interactive Philanthropy Committee hosted a company-wide silent auction, where employees offered up everything from homemade pumpkin bread to swimming lessons, and raised over $500 to support the nonprofit organization First Book. Through First Book, we identified a local San Diego classroom to gift the money to. We catalogued all the books and went to Suzy Aaberg’s class at Whitman Elementary. Suzy works with 30+ students in the Auditory/Oral Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program.  Through First Book’s online marketplace, Suzy’s class was able to select over 75 books to add to their classroom library. We even had the chance to go read to the children and see their reactions to the new books. Other year round activities include beach and creek clean ups with San Diego Surf Rider Foundation as well as food drives to benefit the San Diego Food Bank. Since giving is trendy here at Red Door, we wanted to give back to our local Denver community in a big way. This Fall, we held an Office Space Contest to provide one startup with rent free office space in our downtown Denver headquarters for six months. We wanted to give  startups a chance to share their stories by submitting a video on our Facebook page and telling us why they deserve six months of rent-free office space.  Friends, fans and supporters were able to vote for their favorite videos and the finalists were guaranteed an interview with our Denver team. We are excited to welcome our winner, Air Ball Creative into our Denver home. The two video enthusiasts behind the startup are clearly dedicated entrepreneurs who wowed us with their stories and understanding of the value that our space will bring to them. The office space helps with legitimacy as a smaller company, but at the same time will allow for collaboration and open discussions of ideas and opportunities.
