Fast-fashion retailers provide shoppers with the latest trends that, in many cases, are in one minute and out the next. So if the customer experience changes so frequently, how do brands form meaningful relationships?

The answer lies not in having merchandising tunnel vision, or in vague brand statements, but by creating a community that connects patrons with the brand and with each other, and social networks have staked a modern claim in fostering these relationships. Once retailers fulfill their shoppers’ latest fashion craving, the next step is to keep them involved (and shopping!) through meaningful, one-on-one conversations, no matter the season or sale. Facebook and Twitter both provide real-time engagement opportunities that can extend brand affinity, word-of-mouth and yes, even increased purchases away from the storefront, away from the brand website — right where shoppers are spending the majority of their online time. Here are five tips that fast fashion retailers can do to better amplify customer interaction through social media:

1) Offer exclusive “Social Media Only” promotions
Sharing special offers exclusively for those individuals that follow a particular outlet’s brand increases shopper’s desire to pay attention to that brand’s Facebook or Twitter updates. Furthermore, tracking the ROI of social initiatives can be easily done through coupons and social media sales — just wait until that LBD (little black dress) sells out an hour after you post a Twitter sneak sale!

Well, okay it wasn’t an actual mob-fest, but it was pretty fun to have actor Greg Grunberg (Heroes, Alias, Felicity) in the house – or make that food court – at Red Door client Rubio’s Fashion Valley mall location last Thursday. Greg was in town to promote his new Yowza! application – a mobile coupon app that searches out local deals based on your current location.

Greg and Rubio’s spread the word about the event via Twitter and Facebook, and found a sizable crowd, including a few news cameras, hanging around Rubio’s for chance to talk with Greg and snap a few photos. The Red Door crew was no exception, and we were even privy to some choice Heroes spoilers, shared over some World Famous Fish Tacos which we are trying hard to keep quiet (the spoilers, not our love of Rubio’s fish tacos!)

Greg Grunberg with Rubio's Business Supervisor, Lauren Dougherty

So how did the Yowza and Rubio’s partnership come about?

Rubio’s is one of Red Door’s social media clients (others include Souplantation, Charlotte Russe, and La Quinta Inns & Suites). During our ongoing monitoring, Red Door found a tweet from Mr. Grunberg himself urging Rubio’s to take a look at his Yowza! app. After a few tweets exchanged on Twitter (including a bit of pressure from Mr. Grunberg when he rounded up his followers to mass request Rubio’s on Yowza!), we brought him inside the agency walls for a meet and greet. Rubio’s is now offering exclusive coupons through Yowza! and its been a blast riding along Greg’s Yowza! train!

Come work with us!

Red Door is excited to announce that we are hiring a Business Coordinator. The Business Coordinator is responsible for assisting with day-to-day internet presence management activities for our clients. This person is a member of the Business Services team and will support on multiple accounts in our collaborative, fast-paced environment.

To get a better sense on what a “day in the life” of a Red Door Business Coordinator is like, I sat down with current Coordinators Kelly Donaldson and Justine Stein (pictured above with Red Door President Reid Carr), to learn a bit more about the position. Both are recent San Diego State graduates, Kelly in 2007 with a degree in Business Marketing and Justine in 2008 with a degree in Communication (emphasis in Advertising).

“With over 15 clients, I have to be extremely organized and able to switch my focus quickly,” explained Kelly. “That said, I love the opportunity this position provides to engage directly with clients to execute daily tasks.”

Justine shared that the importance of strong communication skills, both over the phone and especially via email. “I think you need to be extremely confident and outgoing, our job is make our clients happy and you need to know when enough emails have gone through and its time to pick up the phone,” she said.

Both women cited the need to build strong relationships, take initiative and be able to make decisions and trouble-shoot independently. “You do get guidance in the beginning,” said Justine, “but at a certain point it’s really up to you to manage your workload and stay on top of everything.”

“Even though things can get busy and a bit crazy,” explains Justine, “Red Door is such an awesome company with such great people that it’s probably one of the best entry-level positions in the interactive space out there.”

Adds Kelly, “there is always something new to learn, which keeps things exciting.”

The ideal candidate has a proven a passion for the Web and exemplary customer service. An undergraduate degree and proficiency in MS Office are required. Candidates need to be able to juggle multiple tasks, pay close attention to detail, and communicate effectively and professionally.

There’s been a lot of brouhaha of late about Facebook’s ill-fated attempt to change its terms of service to maintain licensing rights of terminated accounts—and understandably so. The issue of customer data ownership is an important one.

However, many businesses with an active presence on the social site are now fearful of getting caught up in any ensuing consumer backlash, and they are wondering what to do—keep our Facebook pages or move on to someplace safer?
