Red Door Interactive Announces New Site for National Brain Tumor Foundation Making it Easier for 190,000 People in U.S. Diagnosed Each Year to Find Information and Collaborate
San Diego Internet presence firm improves search rank, navigability and site update processes, saves NBTF 90 percent on hosting and lightens bandwidth requirements
San Diego, CA, July 28, 2003 –Red Door Interactive, a San Diego-based Internet presence management and strategy development firm, announced that it has launched a new site for The National Brain Tumor Foundation (www.braintumor.org ) that will make it easier for people to find the site and locate information key to recovery. As part of the redesign, Red Door Interactive gave NBTF greater control of its site with a more suitable hosting solution, saving the organization 90 percent, and provided a simplified content management system to enable NBTF to update information freely. NBTF is a national non-profit health organization dedicated to providing information and support for brain tumor patients, family members and healthcare professionals, while supporting innovative research and a cure for brain tumors.
With 190,000 people in the U.S. and 10,000 in Canada diagnosed each year and over 120 different types of brain tumors in existence, effective treatment can be complicated. Because brain tumors are located at the control center for thought, emotion and movement, their effects on an individual's physical and cognitive abilities can be devastating, making information and support for these individuals, their families and health care providers increasingly critical.
Technology implemented by Red Door Interactive, such as Information Architecture Heuristics, helps to simplify navigation of the site and XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) lightens bandwidth requirements and enables visitors with dialup and slower connections to also view important information. Frames were removed, enabling the site to be more easily indexed by search engines and content to be more easily found. Red Door Interactive implemented more affordable Macromedia® Contribute™ software to edit the site, since robust content management systems were cost-prohibitive.
“Our Web site is a key lifeline to our patients and supporters and as such must enable continual communication, objective information and exchange of experiences without absorbing precious funds that may otherwise be used for advancement of our cause,” said Nancy Gaggioli, director of technology and finance, NBTF. “The new site from Red Door Interactive has, in a short time, helped us to increase awareness of NBTF and update information on the latest treatment innovations. Our members have already commented that information is easier to find, making us feel confident that it is helping us in reaching our goals.”
Red Door Interactive concentrated on keeping the look upscale, yet simple and uncluttered so as not to detract from the importance of the information provided. Quick links--including: patient info, contribute, what’s new, join NBTF and message boards--guide visitors from the home page to sections of direct relevance, providing a more personalized and user-friendly approach.
“We believe in the importance of The National Brain Tumor Foundation and wanted to give them a site that would go to work for them. With a knowledge of NBTF’s organizational needs and, in general, what works and does not, Red Door Interactive stepped in to give them the best combination of technology and design to provide the freedom and professionalism at the price point that they need. We examined specific user groups—from doctors, to patients and their families—and tweaked the design to enable each group to address their needs quickly upon entering the site,” commented Red Door President Reid Carr.
